The original Newspaper Room was renovated with funding from The Toronto Star. It reopened November 2001 as the Toronto Star Newspaper Centre, a modern, expansive space in the lower level of the Toronto Reference Library. Encircling the room are floor to ceiling glass panels etched with historic front pages from The Toronto Star.
The space has six digital microfilm workstations for a collection of 55,000 microfilm reels of old newspapers. Researchers can view newspaper microfilm on large format monitors, and may either print pages, or save pages to a flash drive. Custom designed V-shaped glass newspaper reading tables cradle open newspapers for comfortable reading. Nine computer workstations provide access to online newspaper databases.
